Chapter 30

Ulfarr and the rest of his crew crowded into my chamber when I returned that evening, eager to learn what had happened.

“Looks like I’ll be bringing good news back with me to Johan,” Ekkill said with a smile, before looking pointedly at me. “Although I’m sure it won’t come as a surprise.” As the only one who knew the secret underground passageways, it had been agreed Ekkill would report back to Johan on Gautarr’s agreement to fight alongside the Brotherhood. Trying to explain we could send word by magic would only have made us either a laughing stock or raised suspicion among Romsdahl’s more superstitious warriors. That discussion was for another day, although as Ekkill had intimated, I’d already reached out to Joldir with the Sight to advise him of our success.

“Have you paid Tomas back yet and made good on your promise?” asked Patrick. A number of the men laughed and Ekkill’s smile grew wider, white teeth flashing.

“Think I’ll be leaving before dawn.”

Ulfarr laid a hand on my shoulder. “You did well. Just a nudge in the right direction and now we have the men we need.”

“Assuming Audwin Strongshield turns up,” remarked Ekkill.

Ulfarr ignored the jibe. “Johan’s orders were to keep you safe, which is why I need you to listen to what I’m going to say. When Johan’s army reaches Romsdahl and battle is joined you stay here, in the castle.”

I chuckled. “I’m no fool, Ulfarr. I know I’ll be little use on the battlefield.”

Bandor looked worried. “I don’t think you’ll be safe alone with Gautarr. He has a long memory and he won’t forget the wrongs your family have done to him, just as he’s held onto all that bitterness against the Vorund Clan.”

Ulfarr scratched his greying beard and let out a long sigh. “We swore an oath and our brothers will need us in a few days’ time. I won’t to speak for any of you, but I’ll be taking my place in Gautarr’s ranks when the gates are opened. Gautarr and Johan need every able-bodied man fighting out on the field, not guarding Rothgar.”

I looked around the room and saw Ulfarr’s crew nod in agreement with him, as I knew they would. Bandor did so less enthusiastically, meeting my gaze as he did so. Soon afterwards people left, tiredness from the journey finally catching up with them, the lure of sleep in a warm comfortable bed for the first time in months too strong to resist. Bandor lingered, taking a seat as I closed the door behind Ulfarr. I sat opposite him and asked what was on his mind.

“Only that this is dangerous, and I don’t trust Gautarr. I feel … helpless.”

“Careful, that’s your future father-in-law you’re talking about.”

Bandor shot me a venomous look. “Don’t joke about such things. My father’s the Landless Jarl, remember? I doubt Gautarr has any intention of seeing me marry his precious niece any more than he did you.”

“You like her, though?” Bandor blushed, saying nothing. “Who wouldn’t?” I told him.
